Summer is officially over. Pack away the flip-flops and beachwear, and pull out the wooly sweaters and cozy socks! We love this time of year as we slowly transition out of the sultriness of summer into the blissfully cool days of autumn. Porches are decorated with orange pumpkins, brightly colored mums line the steps, and the occasional Halloween scaries remind us that a new season is here. Farmer’s markets are loaded with bushels of just-picked apples and gallons of freshly pressed cider. We know the cold of winter is right around the corner, but for now, we enjoy being outside in the fresh, crisp air, admiring nature at its artistic best. Fall Foliage time is upon us.
Being outdoors is food for our souls. It reduces stress, strengthens our immune system, and gives our mental well-being a boost of positivity. One of the things we love most about living in Hershey, PA, is access to some of the best parks and hiking trails. If you have always wanted to plan a weekend trip to relax and relish the beautiful fall landscape, we would love to make a few suggestions to help you plan your autumn getaway!
- Memorial Lake State Park, Grantville, PA: This 230-acre park centers around a beautiful 45-acre lake. It is perfect for walking, kayaking, or just sitting by the water and enjoying the stunning autumn colors. The hiking trails are rated for easy walking and have wide open paths perfect for fall nature walks. Bird watchers, bring your binoculars, and photography buffs, pack your cameras! The park is open every day of the year from sunup to sundown and is around 24 minutes from our Inn.
- Mt. Gretna Trailhead, Lebanon, PA: Part of the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail, this is one of the most popular areas during peak autumn colors. Ideal for leisure walks, nature hikes, or biking, this well-maintained trail will not disappoint! If you want a bit more adventure, Governor Dick Park is nearby. While these trails are a bit more challenging, there is also the famous Governor Dick Tower, where you can climb to the top and take your leaf viewing to a whole new panoramic level! The Mt. Gretna Trailhead is only 17 minutes from the Inn!
- Fort Hunter Mansion and Park, Harrisburg, PA: If you love history and scenic views of the river, this is the place to visit! Located along the Susquehanna, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park is immersed in historical culture and beauty. Take a guided tour of the mansion (reservations are not required but encouraged) and learn about its legacy and beautiful architecture. Adirondack chairs and swings dot the riverbank, giving you plenty of places to take a respite and savor the colorful fall landscape. There is even a bike path if you want to combine your leaf-peeping with some exercise! This location is a little over 30 minutes from our Inn.
- Strasburg Railroad, Lancaster, PA: While this location is a bit farther than our other suggestions, we think it’s worth the drive. The Strasburg Railroad is America’s oldest operating railroad. Dating back to 1832, it started as passenger and freight transportation until 1958, when it was revived as a tourist destination. Sit back, relax, and revel in the splendor of autumn leaves and stunning countryside while taking a 45-minute authentic steam train ride ending in Paradise, PA. They have several cars to choose from and fun events scheduled throughout the year. Tickets are required in advance. It’s about 45 minutes from the Inn, but well worth the adventure!
