Happy Fourth of July!

At The Inn on Church Road, we take pride in our unique celebrations, and one that stands out is our Independence Day festivities. Our walls are adorned with captivating stories, and we are thrilled to share this rich heritage with all of you!

Inn on Church Road DeedThe inn, nestled in the heart of a region steeped in history, was built in 1821 by Arthur M. Fishburn. The Fishburn family, who played a notable role in the area’s early development, constructed three homes, contributing to our community’s historical tapestry. The original deed was signed in 1798 by Founding Father James Wilson. While he does not have a direct historical connection to the modern town of Hershey, his impact was felt throughout the state. Wilson spent much time in the area, living in such places as Carlisle and Philadelphia and teaching law at the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). He is one of only six individuals who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. His contributions to our nation’s founding were significant in his advocacy for independence and his work shaping our Constitution. We are honored to be custodians of this historic deed displayed above our fireplace in the main living room for you to enjoy.

In the 1800s, the area we now know as Hershey, Pennsylvania, was a picturesque rural farmland, part of Derry Township, also known as Derry Church. In 1905, the visionary Milton S. Hershey revolutionized the chocolate industry by establishing the Hershey Chocolate Company. His pioneering mass production of milk chocolate made this once-luxurious treat accessible to all. But his vision extended beyond business; he built the town of Hershey, providing housing, schools, and recreational facilities for his employees. In 1909, he and his wife, Catherine, founded the Milton Hershey School for orphaned boys. Milton Hershey’s legacy is not just about chocolate; it’s about community-building and fostering a tradition of giving that continues to inspire. We are honored to carry on this tradition here at the inn!

  1. Some of my favorite things to do in the area is a leisurely bike ride on the paths throughout the Milton Hershey school grounds or kayaking down Swatara Creek.

  2. Just found your blog. Thank you for the bit of history that was unknown to me. I’m always amazed at the vision and brilliance our founding fathers had.
